But it's not just the tonal beauty and dexterity of Maya Magub's playing nor yet Matthew Schellhorn's immaculate pianism which alone carry the day here. Just as intriguing and always meticulously fashioned are Magub's bewitching arrangements, which afford novel perspectives on waltzes which are at once familiar, and yet, in their cleverly crafted new guises, will surprise and often enrapture. While the Chopin and Delibes works would seem obvious candidates for remodelling, the waltzes attributed to Beethoven, originally written for piano, might appear to offer less potential for overhaul, but Maya Magub finds something unexplored in each of them. Equally appealing are her nimbly idiomatic Schubert transcriptions, again all familiar fare in their regular versions, but afforded unexpected depth and expressive impact when reimagined for violin and piano.
